Social influence and children’s memory
In her doctoral thesis, Emma Roos af Hjelmsäter investigated how children’s witness reports were influenced by information from a co-witness. In four separate studies, children aged 7-13 were interviewed about a live event they had individually experienced two weeks previously. Prior to the interviews, some of the children listened to a co-witness’ account of the same event – an account which contained some misinformation. Although the children’s reports were generally quite accurate, the results showed that the information provided by the co-witness influenced the children to make two types of memory errors: addition of false details and omission of true details.
In her presentation in Sapporo, Emma will discuss these findings, including what can be done to help improve children’s witness statements. She will also present the topics of her research involvements after her dissertation.
